Reading the best Christmas books for kids together as a family is such a wonderful bonding activity to share in the often hectic lead up to Christmas each year.
In our family we set up a reading tradition from when our kids were just babies to read a Christmas book together each night in December before bedtime. In addition to this family reading time our kids also spend hours in the lead up to Christmas, in their play teepee reading their Christmas books alone too.
Over the years our Christmas book collection has grown substantially from the best Christmas picture books and the best Christmas board books that are the best Christmas books for toddlers to the best Christmas stories kids love, to the best Christmas books for teens. We also love unique Australian Christmas books.

Best Australian Christmas Books
Santa’s Aussie Holiday by Maria Farrer & Anna Walker
Santa has been busy traveling the world and decides he needs a well earned break. After spinning his globe he heads off to Australia for his holiday.

This is also a wonderful unique Aussie Christmas book to send overseas as a Christmas gift so your overseas friends can see what Summer in Australia is like.

Adam Spencer’s Twelve Days Of Christmas
This Christmas book is a cute, clever and hilarious, distinctly Australian take of the classic Twelve Days of Christmas carol.

Full of funny rhymes, stunning illustrations and some cheeky maths (what else would you expect from Australia’s funniest mathematician?!) this book is a delight to read.

Christmas from a wombat’s eye view was always going to be interesting story. This wombat, called Mothball, competes with the reindeer for the carrots left out for them by the local children and takes an unexpected ride in Santa’s sleigh. And let’s just say that it might not just be Santa that faces the prospect of getting stuck in the chimney.

Classic Christmas Books For Kids
How The Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr Seuss
This is a true classic Christmas book for good reason with hilarious rhymes and beautiful illustrations. It’s a great story of redemption which teaches young children the true spirit of giving and love.
How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a fabulous fantasy story for young kids and the young at heart.

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg
The Polar Express is one of my family’s absolute favourite Christmas stories. It is such a magical Christmas story.
Even now when my kids are older they still love this story, reliving the time when the magic of Christmas simply couldn’t be explained and they truly believed.
The Polar Express follows the adventures of a little boy who boards a train bound for the North Pole on Christmas Eve.
Read The Polar Express book one night, and then watch The Polar Express movie the next day.
This is a Christmas book that will be treasured by your kids for years.
Recommended for ages up to 5 years, but my kids kept reading it when they were older too.
Olive, The Other Reindeer by J. otto Seibold & Vivian Walsh
Olive, a dog, is listening to the song Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer one day when when she mis-hears the lyric ‘All of the other reindeer” as “Olive, the Other Reindeer”. Thinking she must be a reindeer instead of a dog she heads to the North Pole to help Santa at Christmas.
This is such a cute, funny and heartwarming story. It is a book your kids will happily re-read every Christmas for years.
Recommended for ages 6 – 7 years.
A Boy Called Christmas by Matt Haig
This is a Christmas story of adventure, snow, kidnapping and an eleven year old boy who isn’t afraid to believe in magic in order to save Christmas.
This book has been declared by leading book critics to be a new festive classic and was so popular that there are now two other books in this series called Father Christmas and Me and the heart warming and witty The Girl Who Saved Christmas.
The Girl Who Saved Christmas by Matt Haig

Thanks to its imaginative story, wonderful characters (hello Truth Pixie), charm and wit, this is a book that adults will absolutely love reading aloud with their child at bedtime.
Nutcracked by Susan Adrian
Georgie has just gained the role of a lifetime, dancing the role of Clara in the Nutcracker ballet. But when the Nutcracker’s magic starts to seep into the real world Georgie must save her friend, the Nutcracker, as well as herself.
This is a great book for believers in magic and fans of ballet.

Best Christmas Books For Teens
Harry Potter Books by J.K. Rowling
Although the Harry Potter books strictly speaking aren’t Christmas books a lot of the wizarding adventures in these books do take place around the Christmas holidays. Teens love Harry Potter and probably don’t want to read a traditional Christmas book so I would class the Harry Potter books as one of the best Christmas books for teens.
Recommended for 9 years+.
Christmas Book Advent Calendar
One fun way to enjoy kids’ Christmas books this December is to wrap 24 kid’s Christmas books and place them in a pile under the Christmas tree. Each day your child can choose one book from the pile to open and read that night as a family. If you have more than one child they can take it in turns to choose a wrapped book.
If 24 books seems too many, then create a 12 day, or even a 7 day, Christmas book advent calendar instead.
Christmas Book Advent Calendars are a beautiful Christmas tradition to begin for your children that will create many wonderful Christmas memories for life.
I hope the above guide to the best Christmas story books for kids has helped you find some wonderful books for the kids in your life. Books are beautiful keepsake presents that can bring so much happiness to kids.
